The MMA fighter’s secret to beating creative exhaustion

I’m no MMA expert or anything like that, so I’m not going to hit you with some crazy facts about the fighting world.

I had a few mention to me that they just weren’t feeling any sort of “vibe” lately.

Which is understandable…

I know everyone is tired of those THINGS being mentioned.

I think that’s what’s adding to all of this overwhelm and the feeling of not being in control grip us.

Youtube took me down a rabbit hole of MMA videos where people were tapping out and it got me thinking.

Tapping out isn’t a bad thing. In a fighting context, if you’re in a position that you know you can’t get out of. Your ego is the only thing that is stopping you and if you carry on, it can and will result in an injury.

Ever hear someone’s shoulder pop out? Not very nice. I can assure you. (I have a party trick where I can pop my right shoulder out of socket and it’s gross)

So to bring this into a creative light. I’ve had a couple of days where I just wasn’t feeling it.

I was forcing that bit of genius or creativity to come out and it was exhausting. Like a mild case of burnout, my brain just wasn’t playing ball.

So the weekend away was reserved for not doing anything.

I did feel shit for not doing anything, but that’s just my own inner battle to sort out.

It’s okay to take time for yourself and do nothing. It’s one, if not. The MOST important thing we neglect.

Our own time.

It’s okay to watch that Netflix series. Sleep in. Play that video game you’ve been putting off for months. Go for a long walk. Binge on that podcast. Write stupid shit in your diary. Draw and paint. Sit and be still.

Breathe. You don’t have to be switched on 100% of the time.

Stephen Walker.
